Little Sunshine’s Teaches Children to Give Back

At Little Sunshine’s, giving back to our 23 communities is so important to us, that’s why we’ve identified November as our month of “Giving Back”. Better yet, it’s our curriculum theme! That means we’re teaching the importance of helping thy neighbor to our students, the future leaders of America.

In honor of our theme, we’ve compiled a list of five simple things you can do with your children to give back to your neighbors and community.

  1. Volunteer at a local food shelter, working together to set tables, serve beverages, and clean up.
  2. Ask someone in your neighborhood if you can rake the leaves in their yard, or deliver a small house plant to someone who is ill.
  3. Participate in a local clothing or food bank, or volunteer to deliver Meals on Wheels, to play with furry friends at The Humane Society of the United States or to teach young people valuable life lessons at Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
  4. Draw or color a picture and deliver it to an elderly family member or someone in a nursing home.
  5. Make some no-sew dog toys for animals in shelters using inexpensive fleece remnants or old torn jeans. Use old blankets, pillows, or fabric remnants to make pet beds for shelters. Ask if you can volunteer to walk dogs. Raise funds to buy food, litter, and other items the shelter needs. Consider adopting a rescue animal. There are rescue organizations for all sorts of companions, from horses to hamsters.

Just as important as giving back, is the taking time to reflect on things you’re grateful for. We suggest taking a few minutes during a car ride, dinner or bedtime to discuss with your children what you’re grateful for and ask them as well. Make sure to remind them that it doesn’t have to be materialistic or anything big. Having these important conversations with your children is a great way to foster an overall positive outlook on life.
